The story is told by a horse named Joey as he journeys from his role as a plough horse to his station as an artillery horse during World War One. During his military service he is accompanied by a young boy who loves him and is determined to bring him home no matter the cost. Joey’s voice brings the harsh reality of war front and center.
The author, Michael Morpurgo, does what so few children’s authors do well. He provides a well-written story with well-rounded characters. I rate this book among those like Sheila Burnford’s The Incredible Journey and Richard Adams’ Watership Down. Like the novels previously mentioned, it can be enjoyed by readers of all ages, and will soon be ranked among literary classics. I
War Horse by Michael Morpurgo can be found as a sound recording and a book from St. Tammany Parish Library.

There are some books that make a bright splash and fade just as quickly as they came. And then there are books that quietly garner attention and critical acclaim all the while sneaking in under our radar. The War Horse by Michael Morpurgo is one such book.
